Our lobby, breakfast area, pool, vending area, picnic area, and first-floor rooms are wheelchair accessible. The bathroom doors in most rooms are not wide enough to accommodate a standard wheelchair; however, Rooms 135 and 136 are designated as wheelchair-accessible rooms. They both have extra-wide doors, bathroom doors, and wheelchair-accessible patios.
Room 135 (front side of hotel) has a low-entry shower that has about a 1-inch lip. (It has a separate tub.) The toilet has a high seat and is set between the two showers. It has a grab rail behind it, but nothing to the sides. The King size bed is 25” from the floor and there are two chairs without arms. There is also a “lift” recliner. The room is accessible through the front sliding glass door (near the reserved handicap parking space) or via the 1st breezeway.
Room 136 (back side of hotel) has a toilet with grab bars on the back wall and right wall, and a regular-height tub/shower combo with a standalone transition. It has a larger patio and two dining chairs without arms. The King size bed is 26” from the ground. It is accessible through the first breezeway, where there is a large (van-accessible) handicap parking space. It also offers easier access to the handicap ramp at the pool since the patio connects to the sidewalk that leads to the ramp.
We do not have an elevator. There are 15 steps to reach the second floor rooms and both suites. If you need a downstairs room for accessibility reasons, please note that in your reservation. These requests get priority over all other requests, and we will honor them whenever possible (and notify you on the rare event that the accommodation you’ve requested is not possible.)
Website Accessibility: We strive to have our website accessible to all, just like our property. If you have any difficulties using our website or booking a room online, please call us at 800-544-8469 or send us an email at reservations@refugeinn.com and we will be glad to assist you.

Smoking Policy: Refuge Inn is a smoke free facility; however, smoking is permitted in designated areas away from the building and rooms, including the picnic area and parking lot. Smoking of any sort, including electronic devices, is not permitted in rooms, balconies, patios, sidewalks, hallways, breezeways, common areas, or the pool area.
Pet Policy: We do not allow any pets. While we love animals, the nearby Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge & Assateague National Seashore do not allow any pets, not even in your vehicle; consequently, pets accompanying our guests were often left alone at the hotel. This situation is not fair to the animals, other guests, or our cleaning staff; consequently, guests’ pets are not allowed on Refuge Inn property–not even in vehicles. This includes all varieties of pets, even reptilian, hypo-allergenic and hairless.
The only exceptions made are for Service Animals, per ADA Requirements. We ask that guests provide advance notice and agree to the following upon arrival:
1. ADA Guidelines mandate that service animals must be under the handler’s control at all times. This means they cannot be left unattended in a hotel room.
2. Service animals must be housebroken.
3. Service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered while in public places, unless these devices interfere with the service animal’s work, or the individual’s disability prevents use of these devices.
4. ADA Guidelines do not override public health rules that prohibit dogs in swimming pools; however, service animals are allowed on the pool deck and in other areas where the public is allowed to go.
Bikes in Rooms: It’s been a long standing policy here at the Refuge that bicycles simply do not belong in rooms. We have nice carpet, deluxe bedding, and nice furniture, all of which can be easily damaged by bicycles. Guests are welcome to secure their bicycles to their vehicles, lock them in our numerous bike racks, or just park the bikes on the patio. For guests wishing to shelter their expensive bicycles from the weather, they may be parked under the third breezeway stairs– it’s still outside, but it is sheltered from wind and rain. Under no circumstances are bicycles permitted in rooms or hallways, and they cannot travel through a room to be stored on second floor balconies.
