March is an excellent month to plan a getaway to Chincoteague. Whether you plan on spending your weekends with us or an entire week for an early spring break, there will be many opportunities to enjoy the island atmosphere. Several local businesses will begin to reopen during the next few weeks, and warmer temperatures are beckoning island lovers outdoors for relaxing strolls on the wildlife trails and beach. Check out two of our favorite early March events below, and stay tuned for additional announcements!
This month, the Museum of Chincoteague will open its themed exhibit, Camp Fletcher: War at our Door. This exhibit will honor the 80 men stationed at Camp Fletcher, a short-lived army base on Chincoteague. Annually, the museum’s March exhibit is a collaborative effort with other nonprofit organizations on the island. On Friday, March 10, the Island Theater will present a showing of Das Boot at 7 p.m. Opening Day will begin at the Museum of Chincoteague on Saturday, March 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A special presentation highlighting the island during World War II and Camp Fletcher will begin at 2 p.m. It will be followed by a 1940s-themed performance by the Ocean to Bay Chorus at 3 p.m. To complete the day’s festivities, the Island Library will host a reading of Chincoteague World War II Love Letters by the Chincoteague Island Theater Company on Saturday, March 11 at 7 p.m. Learn more about the island’s history during World War II, and join us as we honor our heroes on this special occasion!
We had an amazing time at Death by Chocolate last month, and we are looking forward to another opportunity to explore the island with the Search for the Shamrocks on March 17-18! Festivities will begin on Friday, March 17 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. They will continue on Saturday, March 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participating businesses will provide playing cards and clues. Once players solve their riddles, they can register for the gift drawings which will be awarded on Saturday at 5 p.m. Although costumes are optional, they do seem to be encouraged! This will be a fun day for the whole family, and we can’t wait to celebrate with you!
Finally, no trip to the island is complete without indulging in the seafood experience. We stopped at Bill’s Prime Seafood & Steaks for lunch during the Death by Chocolate event, and it was the perfect addition to a special day with friends visiting from out of town. Their Pina Coladas and Crab Cake Sandwiches are phenomenal, and our friends enjoyed the mussels and shrimp appetizers. Visit their website www.BillsPrime.com for a full menu and event announcements.
