Easter weekend is one of the most joyful and relaxing times to visit Chincoteague Island. Spring brings blooming flowers, migrating birds, and the return of island traditions that make this community so special. Whether you're looking to unwind by the sea, explore local art and wildlife, or simply savor a slower pace of life, The Refuge Inn offers the perfect home base for your long weekend.
With cozy accommodations, on-site bike rentals, and a peaceful setting right next to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, the Refuge Inn is just the place to relax, explore, and recharge.
Here’s how we recommend spending your Easter weekend, Friday through Monday:
Friday, April 18: Check In & Get Inspired
Arrive in time to settle into your room and take a deep breath of salty air. You might stretch your legs on a short walk or rent a bike from The Bike Depot, located right on the Refuge Inn property, for a gentle spin through the nearby Refuge trails.
Afterward, head to the Museum of Chincoteague Island, where you’ll learn about the island’s rich history, the legendary wild ponies, and the community's deep connection to the land and sea. Be sure to visit the original Misty and Stormy ponies—the stars of the beloved Misty of Chincoteague story.
Next, make your way to the 44th Annual Easter Decoy & Art Festival, open from noon to 5:00 PM at the Chincoteague Combined School on Main Street. This beloved island tradition showcases the work of local and national carvers, artists, jewelers, photographers, and more. Watch demonstrations, chat with artists, and place a bid on one of the beautiful hand-carved Easter eggs in the silent auction. Admission is $5 (cash only); children under 12 are free.
For dinner, enjoy a warm welcome and a hearty meal at Don’s Seafood Restaurant, a longtime local favorite known for its crab soup, broiled seafood platters, and traditional Eastern Shore fare.
Afterward, treat yourself to a scoop (or two) at Island Creamery, recently named #1 Ice Cream Shop in America by USA Today. Their small-batch, homemade ice cream is as good as it gets—served in waffle cones, sundaes, and seasonal flavors that change throughout the year.
Then, ease into the night back at The Refuge Inn. Borrow a movie or a book from the front desk and curl up in bed for a cozy evening, or if you’re in the mood to stretch out, take advantage of the peaceful indoor pool—a relaxing way to end your first day on the island.
Saturday, April 19: Birds, Boats & Carving Traditions
Start your day bright and early with the Spring Bird Walk, hosted by Eastern Shore Master Naturalists. Meet at Bateman Visitors Center at 8:30 AM for a guided walk through the refuge. Binoculars and a spotting scope are available, and beginners are more than welcome. It’s a beautiful way to greet the morning and discover the returning songbirds of spring.
Next, hop aboard a boat tour with Cowboy Cruise Company or Daisey’s Island Cruises, where you’ll glide through the island’s scenic waterways and marshes. These guided cruises offer a unique look at Chincoteague's wildlife and natural beauty—including the possibility of spotting wild ponies, eagles, osprey, and dolphins.
For lunch, head to Captain Zack’s Seafood, where you can enjoy fried oysters, local seafood, and more in a screened-in porch-style setting. It’s breezy, casual, and delicious—plus their Bloody Marys are a local favorite!
Spend your afternoon back at the Easter Decoy & Art Festival, open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A highlight of the day is the live carving demonstration by Arthur Leonard, one of The Refuge Inn’s very own owners. His passion for the craft—and the island—is sure to inspire.
Don’t forget to cast your People’s Choice votes by 2:00 PM, and check your silent auction bids before the final call. Awards will be announced at 3:00 PM, and the silent auction wraps up at 4:00 PM.
For dinner, enjoy creative small plates and fresh coastal cuisine at Blackfin Island Grill and Tapas—a fun and vibrant spot just a two-minute walk across the street from your room at The Refuge Inn. There’s nothing better than a delicious meal followed by a short stroll back to your cozy home base.
End the evening with a stop at Mr. Whippy’s, a classic island ice cream stand that locals and visitors alike have loved for generations. Their soft serve, sundaes, and signature shakes make a perfect nightcap.
Sunday, April 20: Easter Sunday Island Style
Take the morning slow—enjoy our complimentary breakfast service, and be sure to swing by the front desk coffee bar for a fresh cup of Amarin Coffee, brewed on-site.
For brunch or lunch, visit The Village Restaurant or Blackfin Island Grill and Tapas—both have historically opened on Easter Sunday and offer welcoming service and delicious menus.
Afterward, spend some time outdoors by renting bikes from The Bike Depot and cruising through the Refuge or along the island’s quiet roads. The trails are filled with signs of spring, and it’s the perfect way to enjoy a warm, sunny day.
Spend the rest of your day however you like:
- Walk the beach or visit the Lighthouse trail at the Wildlife Refuge
- Read poolside or relax in the sauna back at the Inn
- (And hey, if you’re craving a repeat visit to Island Creamery… we wouldn’t blame you!)
Monday, April 21: A Quiet Farewell
Before checking out, take one last early-morning stroll or bike ride through the refuge. If you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the ponies or spot herons gliding over the marsh.
And for the perfect send-off, swing by Amarin Coffee on your way out of town. Their Vietnamese iced coffees and giant chocolate croissants are the kind of road trip fuel that makes Mondays just a little easier.
Take a final deep breath of that seaside air and leave feeling refreshed, inspired, and already dreaming of your next visit.
